Eight group B Universities have made it to the A list-Review committee

university case, eight of the 44 found deficient on certain counts have made it
to the 'deemed university' list after rectifying the faults pointed out by the
Tandon committee in 2009. <o:p></o:p></span></span><br />

Tandon committee had found only 38 (group A) fit to qualify as deemed
universities while 44 (group B) were found deficient in some parameters that
needed to be rectified. Another 44, put in group C, were found totally unfit to
be deemed universities. The affected universities went to the Supreme Court and
the matter is being heard. <o:p></o:p></span></span><br />

list. This includes SRM University, Chennai; NITTE, Mangalore; Vellore
Institute of Technology, Vellore; KLE, Belgaum; Bharati Vidyapeeth, Pune; HBNI
(Homi Bhabha), Mumbai; Sathyabama University, Chennai; and Avinashilingam
Institute of Higher Education for Women & Home Sciences, Coimbatore. <o:p></o:p></span></span><br />

</span><span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: large;">The review committee made an assessment of progress made by
these universities and found that substantial improvements were made, be it
conforming to UGC guidelines, governance, quality and innovations in teaching,
research output, faculty resources, doctoral and other research degree
programmes and admission process and award of degrees. <o:p></o:p></span></span><br />

</span><span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: large;">It is not that these universities came up with flying
colours on all parameters but marked improvement was noted in key parameters.
The minimum score needed for category A status is 30 and all eight of them
scored 31. In case of SRM University, research output had increased as well as
the number of students registered for PhD. </span></span></div>

(EcoFemme), Capt. Bavicca Bharathi (Pilot), Ms. Koushalya (Positive Women
Network), and Ms. Prema K. ( Nurse, SRM Hospital) were felicitated by Dr. T.R.
Pachamuthu, Chancellor, SRM University and Dr. P. Thangaraj, Pro Vice Chancellor,
SRM University. The Chancellor addressed thegathering with a strong message for
women. “Firstly, the woman should respect herself and her gender”, he said, “don’t
expect and don’t depend on other.” He brought to light how women are outshining

editions to the melee of smartphones in the market are the new Samsung Galaxy
Note 2, HTC Butterfly and LG Optimus Vu. On paper, these devices have
top-of-the-line features. With 1.6 GHz quadcore </span></span><span style="font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT, serif; font-size: large;">processors,
minimum internal storage of 64GB, the latest Android OS (Jelly Bean) and an 8

they are unarguably the best technological feat available in the phone market
today. But see it in the flesh and you will notice one thing above all else,
its positively gigantic display. The screen size is comically huge. Closer to a
tablet than a phone, they are now being termed as a phablet. Hold it up against
your ears to make a call and just the weirdness of it throws everyone around
you into a hysterical attack. </span></div>

market are just too big. The sheer size of it makes it difficult to carry

affecting the fit of your denim. The large screen also makes a chore out of using
the on-screen keyboard. </span></div>

of these ubercool, but massive displays, the demand for smaller screens might

<span style="font-size: large;">Soumadeep Guha, a final year BTech student from the Software Department of SRM University cracked the Common Aptitude Test 2012 with a score of 99.93 percentile. The Common Aptitude Test or CAT,a nation-wide examination for admissions into the country’s
top business schools announced its results recently. Soumadeep has been called for Group Discussion and interview roundfrom many of the IIMs namely A,C,L, Shillong and Kozhikode. Speaking to Spectrum about his achievement Soumadeep said, “Disciplined work and realisation of strengths are very important for one to succeed.I worked for four hours a day and started from scratch. I solved basic questions and built up my confidence steadily. I never judged any question before solving it and took up each and every question seriously.” He also believes that his persistence to excel and the mock tests conducted by theon campus branch of ‘Career Launcher’ helped him analyse his weaknesses and gave him a clear picture of the loop holes in his preparations. the canteen to pacify their appetite. Noodles and fried rice are served hot even 
after midnight. The doctors and also the patients visit the medical college make 
use of this 24 hour facility. Set in a serene, green atmosphere this canteen did 
not fail to attract the customers.</span><br />

Supervisor, Medical College canteen. In order to help the patients the canteen 
also offer hot water and one could find uninterrupted drinking water supply from 
the Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant. The canteen can accommodate at least 120 
students. For lunch they offer all kinds of variety rice, Chappathi, Paratha, 
etc. Serving at least 150 customers a day, they do sell chocolates, biscuits, 
cool drinks and snacks, too.</span></div>

from the University. Dr. K. Kesavasamy encouraged the students to learn and
excel in their respective fields. He also recommended some educational sources
like COURSERA, free online course offered by Stanford University and advised
the students to know about diverse subjects as solving a problem requires

Need A Read: Supplying The Books Needed For Quality Education

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">After graduating from SRM University in Chenai, Chandan
Jaiswal, founder of Need A Read, found work as a software engineer in
Bangalore. Soon, however, he became unsatisfied with his job, quit, and
returned home to Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. To keep himself busy, Chandan began
teaching underprivileged children in a small Hindi medium school through an NGO
called Koshish.<o:p></o:p></span><br />

recognized a major problem prohibiting the children from receiving a proper
education. “I noticed none of the kids that we were teaching had any kind of
reading material,” explained Chandan. “This stuck in my mind. When I inquired
about this issue from kids and their parents I learned that they couldn’t
afford to buy books. Education was too far out of their reach. And here we were
trying our best to educate them.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Understanding that
this was a problem that needed to be solved, Chandan began discussing with the
school’s English teacher on ways they can address it. Eventually, he came up
with an idea that he called the “Need A Read” project. The project would work
to supply under stocked or non-existent school libraries with books by collecting
used, unwanted, or excess books from schools and colleges. Collection campaigns
would take place close to these areas so that students, when finished with a
book, could donate to Need A Read instead of selling them back or throwing them
away. The collected books would then be distributed to select underprivileged
schools.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>With the idea in
mind, Chandan went about setting up collection stations. Through the initial
collections he was able to set up two libraries in Jamshedpur. His early
success prompted him to begin hiring volunteers to expand the initiative. He
set up a website that would allow him to collect and organize books using an
online database, and to recruit additional volunteers.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>With the help of his
volunteers, Chandan has expanded his operations to Hyderabad, Bangalore, and
Delhi, and is currently looking for more cities to bring the organization to.
“I’m in talks with AIESEC (the world’s largest youth run organisation) of which
I’m an alumnus,” noted Chandan. “AIESEC chapters are present in many cities, so
through this it will be easier for me to scale. AIESEC has a lot of members who
can support this initiative, which will help me sort my main problem of
man-power. Also I’m looking for a partnership with Teach for India with the idea
of supporting them with the reading materials for the schools they are working
with.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>

initiative, Chandan was recently awarded the Grand Winner at the Leaders of
Tomorrow Contest 2013 at ISB Hyderabad. Through Need A Read, Chandan hopes to
achieve his vision that “one day all children will have the books needed to
attain an excellent education.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>

shot, and I guarantee you rest everything will fall into place automatically.

the total 16.6 lakh-strong police force, women constituted a mere 13.3 per cent
(93,887). ‘’In the north-eastern State of Mizoram, there are no women police
personnel at all, whereas in states like Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, the number
of women police personnel is more,’’ she said.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">

cause for all women related issues is the patriarchal society. She also said that

family. But the taboo is getting eliminated and the perception still needs to
