Adding yet another achievement, in the “list of firsts” of SRM University, Dr. Syed Asghar Hussain, Assistant Professor - Department of Ophthalmology, SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, Kattankulathur; a Phaco Surgeon and Specialist in Vitreo Retinal Surgery; has been privileged to become the first Indian Ophthalmologist, to be invited as “Guest Faculty” for the inaugural session of the prestigious international eye conference “Alcon Live Surgery”, held in collaboration between “AkhaliMzera Eye Clinic” and   Alcon Pharmaceuticals Ltd.; on October 19, 2013 at Tbilisi, Georgia.
The Organizing Committee of this prestigious conference handpicked the candidature of Dr.Syed Asghar Hussain from a list of world renowned surgeons, as he has a unique talent of being trained in Phaco-emulsification Surgeries as well assub-specialty training in the form of long term “Fellowship in Vitreo Retinal Surgery(FVRS)”.
During the conference, Dr.Hussain successfully presented five surgical videos in the discipline of "Phaco&Vitreo-retinal surgery complications";which was the highest amongst the invited Guest Faculty; apart from being the “Master of Ceremonies (MC)” for the entire conference; for which he received rave reviews from the organizers as well as the audience. The titles of the five surgical videos presented by Dr.Hussain were“Broken Haptic during Cataract Surgery”, “Nucleus Drop during Phacoemulsification Surgery”, “Posterior Capsular Rupture in Phaco-vitrectomy”, “Management of Subluxated Crystalline Lens Secondary to Trauma” and “Phacoemulsification in Traumatic Iridodialysis”.
The audience comprised practicing ophthalmologists and residents from various countries, such as Russia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, Armenia, Ukraine, etc.; who came up with active and intellectual discussions on the various topics that were presented.
A highlight of this program was the sharing of invaluable clinical information by the faculty, who delivered scientific presentations concerning the latest technologies and treatment methods in various branches of ophthalmology.
The topics were “Reasons for failures in Macular Hole Surgery” by Prof.Dr.Vincenzo Ferrara, “Supra-choroidal Space Surgery - the Next Frontier” by Prof.Dr.Ehab EN L Rayes, “Refractive Vitreo Retinal Surgery” by Priv. Doz. Dr. med. Klaus Lucke and “Surgical Treatment of Presbyopia” by Prof. Dr.ÖmerFarukYilmaz; who too are considered leaders, pioneers and innovators in their respective areas of specialty.
This was followed by a "Gala Dinner" at the breathtakingly beautiful and legendary restaurant called "Funicular"on top of the mountain Mtatsminda, built in 1905 by the earlier Soviet Regime. In Dr.Hussain’s words, “The breathtaking beauty of the Georgian countryside, the lovely people, the historical buildings mixed with modern architecture and the pleasant climate, provided the perfect setting for this one-of-a-kind conference with a multi-cultural audience. I was particularly touched by the hospitality, warmth, love and affection expressed by the Georgian people.”
During the closing Ceremony, he has expressed to the organizers that it would be great if future options of "Collaborative Ventures" between SRM University and Tbilisi State Medical University and/or AkhaliMzera Eye Clinic, could be formally worked out. Through such initiatives, India and Georgia can work together towards a brighter future, thus making this world free from avoidable blindness.
