SRM University’s Thamizh Academy established with an objective to promote Tamil Language, Literature, Art, Culture and Tamil Research, has been implementing several schemes for this purpose.

It has been offering online Diploma courses on Tamil Language, Yoga and Human Excellence specifically for the Tamilians settled abroad. Along with this the academy has also been publishing atypical and rare Books on Tamil Language, arts, literature and culture. In addition to these, since the year 2012, the academy had allotted the fund of Rs 20,50,000/- to be awarded for the best books on various areas of research by the Tamil Scholars. And so far the academy was holding 11 categories of awards. From this year onwards some changes have been integrated in the Award rules and two new awards have been included.
The Award for young Tamil Scholar is renamed as Dr. Abdul Kalam award. With the objective of encouraging the publishers who publish worthy books, the publishers of the 8 books (which will be selected by the Academy) will be recognized and awarded as well by sharing the prize money with the publisher. From this year onwards the author will get Rs.1,25,000 and the publisher of that book will get Rs.25,000. Thus from this year onwards the total number of awards will be 12 and the total prize ; is Rs.22 lakhs.
