Faculty of Science and Humanities
In a span of just eight years the Faculty of Science and Humanities has seen its expansion not only in depth but also in width. Starting off in 2003 with about forty students and faculty strength of 3, in 2010-2011 the FSH boasted a student strength of nearly 2400 students and a faculty figure around ninety. For the academic year 2011-2012 the incoming freshers alone is around 1400 and this academic year we will see more than 100 full time faculty members assisted by some thirty non-teaching technical and non-technical staffers.
The growth of the FSH can also be measured in the steady expansion of the number of Departments. From just the Department of Bio-Technology in 2003 offering courses at the Bachelors and Masters Level, today the FSH has ten major Departments and five allied departments offering 16 programs at the Bachelor's level and 7 at the Master's level.
Not merely for the sake of convenience but for reasons of staying abreast with what is happening in India and globally, the various Departments have been brought under the umbrella of several schools. In all there are seven such Schools at the FSH-Languages, Commerce and Economics, Media Studies, Government and International Affairs, Computer Sciences, Basic Sciences and Bio-Sciences.
A noteworthy feature in the growth of the FSH has been the ability of SRM University to attract high caliber teachers trained in India and overseas to impart quality education to students and at the same time utilizing their time to attend major conferences and workshops besides publications and research projects.
A laboratory with more than 350 computers, a Biotech lab with sophisticated instruments, a Visual Studio, editing and dubbing suites and a preview theatre are all made available to upgrade the academic knowledge of our students cutting across disciplines.
The Faculty of Science and Humanities has had the rich tradition of attracting students from all parts of India and also from other parts of the world like South Asia, East Asia and Africa; and is also an active participant in SRM University student semester-abroad and faculty exchange programmes.
In 2011 a student affairs cell, a career development cell and a placement cell have been initiated has also initiated keeping in mind the academic and social welfare of the students; and an NSS programme for the welfare of the communities around SRM University.
Spectrum, the University Newspaper edited and published by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication brings out useful general and technical information about the goings on in the several campuses and faculties as also highlighting the inventions of the student community.
In 2010 the FSH brought into its fold the SRM Community Radio Service that began broadcasting in 2007 (90.4 mhz) and has been successfully putting out progrmmes to the community in and around Kattankulathur.
The FSH also boasts of a Faculty Club designed for the academic, intellectual and social development of faculty members.
The Faculty of Science and Humanities is led by veteran and distinguished academicians cum administrators-Dr. R.Balasubramanian as Director and Dr.K.Sengotti, Dean at the Kattankulathur Campus.
